Pam’s Shoes: Sexy and Skin-Free!

No one knows more about pleathering herself than PETA pal Pamela Anderson, so it’s no surprise that the sultry Baywatch star has designed her own signature line of skin-free shoes. Pam thinks that fashion should be fun, not fatal, so her shoes are made with completely cruelty-free materials—not a trace of leather!

Why Pam Loathes Leather
Leather is usually made from cows’ skins but may also be made from pigs, goats, sheep, exotic animals like alligators, ostriches, and kangaroos, and even dogs and cats. Since leather is rarely labeled, you never really know whose skin you’re in.

Animals killed for their skin endure the horrors of intensive factory farming before they’re shipped to slaughter, where many are skinned alive. Buying leather directly contributes to factory farms and slaughterhouses since skin is the most economically important part of the cow after the flesh. When the milk production of cows in the dairy industry declines, their flesh often doesn’t make the cut for consumption, but they are still slaughtered so their skin can be made into leather. The hides of “veal” calves are made into high-priced calfskin. The economic success of the animal-slaughter business is directly linked to the sale of leather goods.

Leather is also no friend of the environment. Leather products are loaded with chemical preservatives to keep them from decomposing in the buyer’s closet, and leather production pollutes the environment and gobbles up precious resources.
